40+ Stunning and Creative Graffiti Artworks

Most people have the impression that graffiti was started by young vandals trying to “make a statement”, however graffiti has been known to go as far back as 30 000BC. The Ancient Romans and Ancient Greeks, used to scribble on their walls, descriptions of their current day events. Then, in the 1900’s, graffiti in the form of vandalism, started appearing all of the world. With pointless scribbles of “crew” names being tainted all over cities, it’s not surprising that for a long while graffiti had such a negative connotation associated with it.

However, as the years have passed on, a few people have taken graffiti to the next level. Taking it from something that people generally frown at, to something that makes people go WOW! Most people are even going as far as calling graffiti street art. The truth is, that there is a sense of beauty in a lot of the graffiti being created today. Beautiful portraits of people, or abstract art that makes you look twice. A graffiti artist is, essentially, a modern day artist, his choice of canvas is just different, unique and grabs the attention of a myriad of people.

Tribute To Graffiti: 50 Beautiful Graffiti Artworks | Inspiration | Smashing Magazine

Street culture and graffiti are well-known for being provocative, appealing, bold and uncompromising. Originally used by gangs to mark their territory in some urban area, graffitis have now become a rich medium for unrestricted expression of ideas and statements. In fact, creative designers and artists across the globe use this form of art to deliver their message and showcase their work.

Probably the most prominent graffiti artist is Banksy, a famous pseudo-anonymous British artist whose works focus on topics such as politics, culture, and ethics. His art has appeared in cities around the world; it’s worth mentioning that Banksy does not sell photos of street graffiti or mount exhibitions of screenprints in commercial galleries. You can explore Banksy’s works in the Time’s slideshow The World According To Banksy. However, many different artists explore graffiti in a variety of ways.

In this episode of Monday Inspiration series we are presenting a tribute to street art and graffiti — over 50 examples of beautiful and impressive graffiti artworks. Hopefully everybody will find some inspiration at least in some of the works showcased below. Feel free to explore the works of artists by following the links to their sites.

R27 CREATIVELAB | Rajesh Pancholi |: Graffiti Taxonomy - 2400 graffiti tags

Evan Roth photographed more than 2,400 graffiti tags in Paris and then cataloged the images by letter. The site shows a selection of tags each containing one of the ten most used letters to illustrate the wide range of styles. Graffiti Taxonomy is a graffiti-based study in which characters are isolated from a collection of graffiti tags that were photographed in the same geographic region.

Todd Vanderlin built a tag visualizer for all of the graffiti photos taken for the study. The visualizer show the relationships between the letters within the tags. You can investigate the letter down to its location in the original photograph. The project was a blast to work on. The exhibit looks amazing, congratulations Evan!

Arts & Culture | Banksy in secret exhibition stunt

Graffiti artist Banksy has pulled off an audacious stunt amid tight secrecy to stage his biggest ever exhibition.

A burned-out ice-cream van is among 100 works Banksy has installed at Bristol's museum, replacing many of the museum's regular artefacts.
The reason the museum was closed was kept secret from top council officials.
Banksy said: "This is the first show I've ever done where taxpayers' money is being used to hang my pictures up rather than scrape them off."
Staged in the council-owned City Museum and Art Gallery, Banksy v Bristol Museum features animatronics, installations and a sensory display.

"This show is my vision of the future, to which many people will say: 'You should have gone to Specsavers'", Banksy added.
